Steering Committee of 2022–2026

Chair — Alireza Naqinezhad

Alireza Naqinezhad is Professor at University of Mazandaran, Iran. His studies focus on biodiversity and climate change, forest ecology and phytosociology, Irano-Turanian steppe and (dry) grassland vegetation, data analysis and etc. He is an active member of IAVS for several years. He has published several valuable research from Iran, especially Hyrcanian forest, Irano-Turanian region and etc. You can see more info on Google Scholar (https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=4NRRbhsAAAAJ&hl=en)

Vice chair — Jian Zhang

Prof. Jian Zhang’s main interests are biodiversity and community ecology. He has had rich experience in different forest

ecosystems in East Asia, North America and Europe. Recently, He is organizing a long-term research network on biodiversity along elevational gradients. By collaborating with over 20 young vegetation ecologists from different regions, the team of Prof. Zhang has established 12 elevational transects in

different mountains and are exploring how biodiversity responses to the changes in climate and land uses. More information can be found here: https://ecoinfor.github.io

Secretary – Sebastian Świerszcz

Sebastian Świerszcz is a vegetation ecologist in the Botanical Garden of Polish Academy of Sciences. His research focuses on vegetation classification and the biogeographical and ecological patterns of different scales, with a particular emphasis on gradients in species and functional richness as well as endemism in Middle Asia (especially in Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan). He is also involved in the conservation and applied ecology of endangered species, the management of biological invasions, and the assessment of the impact of global change on biodiversity. He has participated in several projects focused on the monitoring of conservation-important plant species and habitats.

Secretary – Arkadiusz Nowak

Arkadiusz Nowak is a botanist and vegetation ecologist who studies various types of ecosystems in Europe and Asia. In recent years, he has focused much of his work on Middle Asia, where he has been conducting research for 17 years on topics such as vegetation classification, climate change, and the retreat and extinction of endemic species. Dr. Nowak has also recently become interested in belowground biodiversity and modern methods of plant translocation for conservation purposes. He has been a member of the International Association for Vegetation Science (IAVS) for many years and has supported the publishing efforts of Vegetation Classification and Survey. In addition to his scientific pursuits, Dr. Nowak is also a lover of the beauty, charm, and diversity of plants, and he admires the wild landscapes of Asia. He is committed to protecting these pristine spaces from degradation. Currently, he is a lecturer at the University of Opole and the Director of the Botanical Garden of the Polish Academy of Sciences.

Social Media Officer/webmaster – Cheng-Tao Lin

Cheng-Tao Lin (orcid=0000-0003-2857-1625) is an associate professor at the Department of Biological Resources and Biodiversity Research Center of National

Chiayi University in Taiwan. The main research topics are the response of alpine vegetation to climate change, animal-plants interactions, and biodiversity citizen

science. Recently, Cheng-Tao also promoted using the iNaturalist (https://inaturalist.org) platform to collect

massive occurrence data and can contribute fundamental biodiversity data to conservation policies.

Treasurer – Jalil Noroozi

Jalil Noroozi, PhD in plant ecology and

biodiversity, is a senior postdoctoral researcher at the University of Vienna. Since 2003, Dr. Jalil Noroozi has been working on the plant diversity and vegetation types of the high mountains of Southwest Asia. His main research focus is on the plant diversity of alpine habitats, including hotspots and the classification of alpine vegetation types. Currently, his research project is focused on the phytogeography of alpine species in the high mountains of Southwest Asia and their response to glacial and post-glacial climate oscillations. Dr. Noroozi has been an active member of the International Association for Vegetation Science (IAVS) for over 10 years and has participated in numerous meetings of the IAVS and the European Vegetation Survey (EVS) in recent years.

Event Organizer – Bayrtungalag Batsaikhan

Bayrtungalag Batsaikhan is a full-time scientific secretary at the Institute of Geography and Geoecology of the Mongolian Academy of Sciences, where she also leads a research group as head of the Division of Environmental and Natural Resource Management. She has a background in physics and holds a master's degree in remote sensing and GIS. She gained experience in advanced study while pursuing her Ph.D. in environmental geochemistry at the Environmental Geochemistry Laboratory of Korea University. Her research, which focuses on river and groundwater quality in Mongolia using hydrochemical and isotopic data, has been published in international scientific journals.
